What should TiVo do?
I think Om Malik probably got this ball rolling with his How To Save TiVo? post. It was picked up by Fred, who got a call about the CEO position, which got him thinking in his Whither Tivo? post. Fred’s not taking it (too bad) and doesn’t know who would want it. I’m pretty sure they won’t be calling me, but I’ll add my two cents to the conversation.
Upgrade to Model 2
I don’t know what the split between model 1 and model 2 TiVos is, but if there is as big an installed base of model 1s out there as I think, then TiVo really needs to make a push for getting existing customers to upgrade. The model 1 TiVos don’t support the features that are going to be critical for the next steps, so they need to be replaced.
Roll out new model with built-in Ethernet and WiFi. They shouldn’t be options any longer. Get 802.11g really working, too.
GoToTiVo
Roll out GoToTiVo. Not TiVoToGo. That is already here. I don’t know how successful it has been, but it doesn’t appeal much to me, whereas GoToTiVo would. What is GoToTiVo? It is the feature that lets me playback video from my computer on my TiVo. It might be home videos. It might be video that I’ve downloaded via BitTorrent. It might be some video that someone sent me via e-mail. (Maybe there should even be a special e-mail box for my TiVo, but that will require some sort of authentication to prevent spam, etc. We’ll save that for later.)
SDK Demos for Everyone
Let everyone see the SDK. I’ve been playing with it, and it is cool. The demo apps. are cool. However, the average user isn’t going to want to run an SDK demo app. on their PC (or Mac—everything works just fine on a Mac) to see it. Put some demos on a public server and let people see them who aren’t going to develop. Leave the backdoor sequence in if you want, but take any other barriers out of the way. People need to see what is coming so they can tell their friends&mdashjust like they told them about TiVo in the first place.
CableCARD
Get CableCARD support out now. Forget making people wait until 2006 for an HDTV/CableCARD combo. The biggest annoyance I have with my TiVo is that it doesn’t always change channels correctly via IR. I’d buy a CableCARD-enabled TiVo in a heartbeat, but don’t make be wait until 2006. Then I might not.
