It was a quick del.icio.us link, so I was probably being a bit flippant. Upon taking the time to reread, I get it, and I think you make some good points—particularly with respect to O'Reilly promoting hacking the iPhone over developing on truly open platforms.
That said, my initial reaction was to your having an iPhone in your pocket but then railing against "mindless zealots who seem to love being abused by Apple year after year because the stuff they make is shiny." I think there are good reasons to use and develop for the iPhone. It isn't open, but it is still awfully compelling. It is in a lot of pockets. It does the web better than any similar device I've ever used. It is a pretty darn good video and music player. It has a kick-ass development environment. Etc.
